Clenching is when you hold your teeth together tightly; grinding is when you rub them against each other. You might do it while concentrating during the day, or while you’re asleep without realising.
It’s often called bruxism. A tired jaw, sensitive teeth or someone hearing you grind at night can be clues. You don’t need to know which muscles are involved; we’ll help you understand whether a muscle-focused consultation is relevant, or whether dental care is the better place to start.
Stress and anxiety can play a part, but they aren’t the only explanation. Sleep problems, some medicines and higher alcohol or caffeine intake can contribute too. Sometimes daytime clenching becomes a habit you barely notice.
Because the causes vary, relaxing a muscle won’t necessarily solve the whole problem. If you have damaged teeth, ongoing pain or a jaw that locks, start with a dentist or appropriate healthcare professional.
We’ll assess muscle-related jaw tension and explain the options, and whether dental care or another approach would suit you better.
Addressing your concerns can feel daunting when you have never visited a clinic before or you're not sure which treatments you need. At Facebox London, you will not be expected to know any terminology or make a decision before you feel ready. Our goal is to make you as comfortable as possible.

You may wake with a tired jaw, notice sensitive teeth or be told you make grinding sounds. A dentist can check for signs of wear. These clues can have other causes too, so it’s worth getting assessed.
If you have pain, tooth damage, sensitivity or changes in how your jaw opens, yes. Your dentist can assess your teeth and jaw and discuss protection such as a fitted guard. Our consultation doesn’t replace that care.
No. A fitted guard protects your teeth, while muscle-focused treatment, where appropriate, addresses a different part of the concern. It won’t repair tooth damage or remove every cause of grinding.
Some muscle treatments can affect lower-face width, so we’ll discuss that possibility before you decide. If appearance is your main concern, see facial shape and structure, or ask us which consultation to choose.
