ANTI-WRINKLE TREATMENT FOR VERTICAL LIP LINES
Fine vertical lines around the mouth are often called smoker’s lines—but you certainly don’t need to smoke to develop them. These lines can form through repeated lip movements, such as talking, sipping, kissing and pursing the lips. They may also become more noticeable as the skin naturally loses collagen over time. Carefully placed anti-wrinkle injections can reduce some of this repeated movement, helping early lip lines appear softer while keeping the result natural.
Appointments available in Leytonstone, East London.
TREATMENT COST
£150 as a standalone treatment. Can be added to 1-3 areas, for £50.
SESSIONS NEEDED
Usually one treatment session, with a review if needed.
RESULTS
Fine movement-related lip lines gradually soften over two weeks.
Vertical lip lines, aka “smoker’s lines”, are the fine vertical lines that develop above—and sometimes below—the lips. They’re also known as lip lines, lipstick lines or perioral lines.
The muscle surrounding the mouth contracts whenever we speak, drink, kiss or purse our lips. Over time, this repeated movement can contribute to lines forming in the skin around the lip border.
Smoking can make them more noticeable, but it’s far from the only cause. Genetics, sun exposure, collagen loss and the natural ageing process can all play a part.
Smoker’s lines treatment uses small amounts of muscle-relaxing treatment to reduce excessive puckering around the mouth. This can help soften lines caused by movement without adding volume to the lips.
This treatment is generally best suited to early lip lines that appear or become more noticeable when the mouth moves. It can help with: • Fine vertical lines above the upper lip • Lip lines that appear when pursing the mouth • Early movement-related lines around the lips • Repeated puckering around the mouth • Slight creasing along the lip border • Softening the appearance of early lipstick lines • Creating a smoother-looking area around the mouth If the lines are deeply etched into the skin and remain visible while your mouth is completely relaxed, muscle-relaxing treatment may not be enough on its own. We may recommend lip filler, microneedling or another skin treatment instead.
Your appointment will always start with a consultation so we can chat through your concerns, take a look at the treatment area and understand what you’d like to achieve. We will take time to understand what has been bothering you, explain what this treatment can realistically do for you, and answer any questions you have.
Everything is tailored 100% to you, and your unique goals. If you decide to go ahead, we'll apply a numbing cream, if appropriate, and begin the treatment. We won't start until you're 100% happy. At the end of the appointment you’ll also be given clear aftercare advice so you know exactly what to do afterwards and how to get the best from your results.

Absolutely. The name is slightly misleading because these lines are very common in people who have never smoked.
Repeated mouth movement, genetics, sun exposure and the natural loss of collagen can all contribute to vertical lip lines. Smoking is only one possible factor.
It may soften early lines caused by repeated muscle movement, but we wouldn’t promise to remove them completely.
If the lines are deeply set and remain visible while the mouth is relaxed, filler or a collagen-stimulating skin treatment may be more suitable. Sometimes a carefully planned combination works best.
Results usually last for around 12 weeks, although this varies between clients. The muscles around the mouth are used constantly for speaking, eating and drinking, which can affect how long the result remains noticeable.
Movement and the appearance of the lines will gradually return.
It depends on what is causing them. Anti-wrinkle treatment reduces repeated muscle movement, making it particularly useful for early lines that appear when you purse your lips.
Filler may be more suitable for lines that are visible at rest or where lost support around the lip border is contributing. We’ll assess both the movement and the skin before recommending either option.
Because the treatment relaxes part of the muscle around the mouth, temporary changes when speaking, drinking through a straw or making certain lip movements are possible.
We use a careful, conservative approach to reduce this risk. We’ll explain the potential side effects fully before you decide whether to go ahead.
